In one workplace a staff member recently tripped and fell whilst walking across an office area, breaking a bone in the hand. The fall resulted from both feet getting entangled in a plastic packing-case strap, which had been removed, without being cut, and discarded on the floor. The uncut strap twisted itself into a double ‘snare’, into which both feet got caught, pitching the person forward onto the knees and then the face; an attempt to break the fall ended in the fracture of a bone in the hand. The accident was classified as serious harm and reported to Department of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH).

In a workplace you need to be aware of the hazard posed by the careless discarding of such packaging material. It is advisable to cut the straps into pieces and then place the remnants in the bins provided.
