What is your attitude towards employing a person who does not speak English correctly?
A large employer in a hospital in London was asked this questions. Her is the answer:
It depends very much on the job. In the Health Service if the job is actually dealing with the public the person has to be able to speak enough English so that when the patients come into the hospital they can feel comfortable. Now of course we have people who come into hospital that don’t speak English either, but if they are talking to people who don’t understand what they are saying or cannot understand what the person is saying back to them it creates extra stress in the health service.
But there are some jobs where there is not a lot of English needed. For example working in “backroom” jobs such as in an office, or cleaning, or cooking. But enough English to actually be able to understand instructions needed and some jobs people don’t realise that there is some reading to do. For example, envelopes where internal mail is concerned, you have to know where something written on a piece of paper has to go to. We actually look at what we need for the job rather than whether the person speaks English perfectly. To have a few grammatical errors is not the problem. It is actually understanding what is being said both ways.
