Telephoning Reception

‘Hello.’

‘Yes, Hotel Reception, can I help?’

 ‘Yes. I want to attempt a call back to my wife, who’s overseas.’

‘To which country, Sir?’

‘To New Zealand.’

‘OK. To place a call dial 0 then 649 followed by the local number.’

‘Many thanks.’

‘You’re welcome. Bye.’

1: attempt = here it means to try, or to make an effort

2: who’s = is a shortened form of ‘who is’ 

3: overseas = is a way of saying ‘in another country’

4: place = here it means dial a telephone number correctly

5: local = in the home area or neighborhood

6: sir = a form of way of addressing someone you don’t know
