Instructions: Read the short article and answer the questions
How Can You Become a Good Language Learner? (Level 3)
1: Take risks with language. Do not be shy to speak and use the new language.
2: Accept that making mistakes is part of learning a language.
3: Learn from mistakes by remembering some of the corrections each time. Do not try to remember them all the at once.
4: Practise the new language as often as possible in different situations and with different people.
5: Everyday write down new words in a notebook. Then look up the meanings or phrases from the dictionary or ask a friend for the meaning and study these words and the sentences.
6: Ask friends or family members to test new words everyday
7: Spend time everyday studying
8: Listen to your own language and be self-critical. Try to find some of their own mistakes. Decide what part of the language you need to practise most.
9: Read carefully anything that you write and look for mistakes.
10: Have at least two dictionaries
* a bilingual English-mother tongue dictionary which can be used to check meanings
* an English-English dictionary which can be used after the English-mother tongue dictionary. This can help to learn how the word is used and to give examples. The higher their language level the less a bilingual dictionary is needed
11: Be keen and motivated to improve their English
12: Be well organised in your study. For example:
* find a regular time and length of time to study
* find time to talk in English to speakers whose English is better than theirs
* have a place to study in the house where it is quiet
* read and write regularly
13: Learn to enjoy the sound of yourselves speaking English
