Preparing for a Job Interview

If you have been offered an interview, then ring up the company to find out about the job. That is try to get as much information about the company. You could talk to the secretary or a supervisor. If it is a small company you may talk to the boss or manager or owner.

If it is a large company talk to the Personnel Manager or the Human Resources manager. Find out information such as their main business or activity, how they operate, are they a local / national or international company, the number of people employed, the skills they are wanting in a new person, the financial performance, the growth that is likely for the company in the future and their latest developments.

What you will need to find out will depend on the type of company that you are going to be interviewed by. That is if it is as a storeman then you may just need to know for example how many people are in the company and what products they deal in.

If it is an engineering firm or a professional type job, then you may need to know some more things like the growth that is likely of the company and the type of skills that they are

wanting a new person to have.

Before the interview day try to get a job description and person specification. Some companies will not have these. It will depend on the type of job that you are applying for. It is a good idea to ask anyway.

Study the advertisement. This often tells you what they are looking for. Identify the type of person that they are looking for. Think about the skills that you have and be prepared at the interview to talk about the ones that are related to that job.

Make a list of the questions that you may ask the interviewer. Practice your answers to some questions that you think you may be asked. Find out about the interviewer and /or the panel. That is how many people will interview you? If there is a panel who will be on it?

Arrive at the interview between five and ten minutes before the interview starts.
