Chinese Has a Saying for Almost Every Stage of Life (Level 3)

Chinese has a saying for almost every stage of life, and these five are all more than 2,000 years old:

  • 塞翁失马,焉知非福 (sài wēng shī mǎ, yān zhī fēi fú): “Who knows if losing a horse is bad luck?” An old man lost his horse, then it came back with a second one. Good luck and bad luck kept taking turns, so he never rushed to judge. From the Huainanzi.
  • 千里之行,始于足下 (qiān lǐ zhī xíng, shǐ yú zú xià): “A journey of a thousand miles starts under your feet.” Every long journey has a first step. Big goals feel less scary once that step is taken. From Laozi’s Dao De Jing.
  • 欲速则不达 (yù sù zé bù dá): “Rushing does not get you there.” Rush a task and mistakes pile up, then it has to be redone. Steady progress often gets there sooner. From Confucius’s Analects.
  • 己所不欲,勿施于人 (jǐ suǒ bú yù, wù shī yú rén): “Do not do to others what you would not want done to you.” Before treating someone a certain way, imagine being on the receiving end. If it would feel bad, don’t do it. From Confucius’s Analects.
  • 三人行,必有我师 (sān rén xíng, bì yǒu wǒ shī): “Among any three people, one can be my teacher.” In any small group, someone is better at something. Watch them, and learn from them. From Confucius’s Analects.
